Les Trois Rois

In Switzerland’s 725-year history we never had a king, but fear not, there might be a solution for all you princes and princesses out there who want the feeling of royalty, even if only for a couple of nights.
For our project that we shot a couple of weeks ago, Moritz and I were lucky enough to stay at one of Europe’s oldest city hotel’s, dating back to 1681. Already upon entering the Grand Hotel Les Trois Rois in Basel you feel like one of the three kings (Les Trois Rois meaning The Three King’s in French). After a new ownership in 2004 it was carefully restored during two years and is now in the condition that it was back in 1844, without missing any of the modern amenities of course.
Indeed, you have to be a fan of the Belle Époque, but for me who every now and then has a craving for all that it was the perfect opportunity to let my inner prince come out and enjoy the elegant and royal atmosphere. The Napoleon Suite with its high ceiling, voluminous curtains, golden plastering and antique furniture really made you go back in time and dream of a life at the court.
They might not have a spa area, but there is still something very relaxing about the atmosphere of the hotel. Imagine sipping a Dry Martini in the candle-lit bar while the fireplace crackles and the pianist plays some smooth jazz tunes, followed by a delicious dinner at the Brasserie – how about a pumpkin-curry-soup followed by a beef entrecote with Café de Paris, potato gratin and vegetables? Tell me this doesn’t sound just as relaxing and indulging.
What makes this hotel unique is not only its rich history, but also their eye for details, the location right by the Rhine and impeccable as well as friendly service. Recently they also opened a flower boutique called «Fleurs des Rois» where they sell the beautiful flower arrangements that you see all over the hotel. A real treasure right by the tri-border area and definitively worth checking out, even if only for a drink.
Two fun facts that are visible in this photo: 1) The pillars you see are not made out of marble, but are, in fact, wooden and painted as if marble. 2) The hotel is slightly askew as it bends towards the waterfront.

«Fleurs des Rois» is located not far from the hotel and sells some beautiful flower arrangements, pots, candles and other small, hand selected goods.
